4.1 Archaeological Site at no. 5, Rua D. Hugo

 

 

The original house, adjoined to the Primitive Wall of the city, was of Gothic design however it was destroyed.
That being said, one of its original walls was salvageable and as a result was used in the construction of the new building.
In this archaeological site, which is more than three metres deep and twenty archaeological layers, architectural ruins and objects from the third and fourth centuries BC up to the present time were found.
Traces of the proto‐historic "castro", which gave origin to the urban centre and to the Roman and Dark Ages occupations that followed, were identified here for the first time.

4.2 Historic Centre of Guimarães

 

 

The historical city of Guimarães is linked with the creation of Portuguese national identity from XII century, considering his urban settlement a testimony of town development across very diverse and particular types of architectural construction.
The UNESCO classified this site in 2001 as World Heritage Site including the urban medieval fabric, the series of great significance places as well as his variety of traditional building techniques.
Guimarães, Portuguese nationality cradle, invites all visitors to enjoy the streets of its Historic Center, feeling the history of Portugal in the various monuments and squares, churches and museums, to explore the X century castle, birthplace of D . Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal and to discover the Bragança Dukes Palace, XV century splendid mansion classified as National Monument. Guimarães, a city with medieval foundation, a World Heritage Site, it will be the European Capital of Culture in 2012, exceptionally well preserved, which maintains the desire to take care his historical legacy and at the same time to be one of the most contemporary and gorgeous city in the Europe.

4.3 Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art

 

 

Designed by the architect Siza Vieira, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art is the first project of its kind in Portugal and the largest multidisciplinary cultural centre of the northern region. Unique in its architectural simplicity and its natural setting, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art is currently the most visited paid museum in Portugal, where temporary exhibitions of the most important national and international artists are presented, being part of the most important circuits of contemporary art. The Museum is the cornerstone of the Serralves Foundation, whose mission is to raise the general public's awareness concerning contemporary art and the environment. Located in the heart of Porto, Serralves is installed on the property built by Carlos Alberto Cabral (Count of Vizela), between the 20's and 40's of the twentieth century, bringing together in one space a Museum of Contemporary Art, a park and a house Art Deco, as well as leisure facilities, shops and restaurants.
